We're open and an announcement

All fics in, all pinch hits done. Now your mod gets to collapse for 2 minutes before starts.

When I first started this exchange, I planned to alternate it with a kids tv exchange, either winter/summer, or every other year. Then I got tapped to help run Yuletide and people really liked the idea of a kidlit exchange, so I ended up running that three years in a row. But now it's time. Next summer instead of fic corner, I'll be running that kids' tv exchange, which is unnamed as yet (put your suggestions in the comments).

Eligible fandoms will include cartoons and live action shows aimed at kids or teens. It will definitely include the precursors to dedicated kids tv networks (such as Full House and Boy Meets World), but I'm not sure where the eligibility rules will come down on something like BtVS where the main characters start in high school, but graduate less than halfway through the series.

I'm thinking I'll allow made for tv movies such as After School Specials or Disney Channel original movies, but I don't want to get into wide theatrical release movies.

And pardon my further asking, but would that include things like Anne of Green Gables and BBC's Chronicles of Narnia, that started out as miniseries? I never encountered them until they were movies, so kind of not sure.

Episodic children's tv whether short (miniseries) or long form (full seasons) will definitely be eligible. One shots that aired first on tv will probably be eligible (failed pilots, movie adaptations of children's books, etc.). My definition of tv includes streaming services such as Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime.

I'm debating allowing movies/shows that were direct to dvd (American Girl movies, Disney sequel movies, Scholastic/Weston Woods type picture book adaptations), movies with a limited theatrical release (in theaters less than a week, only in select theaters, only shown at film festivals), and web series.

I'm inclining towards not allowing reality-type shows (game shows, Masterchef Jr., etc.), because I don't feel comfortable about the rpf aspects wrt children.

OK Thank you! Looks like I'll be participating. :)

How would you feel about Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman? It's half reality/game show and half cartoon characters. I'm interested in fic about the cartoon characters and their lives and not at all about the real kids, but I could see it being a really, really sticky case. If you feel it goes too close to dangerous territory, that's fine. I'm just wondering because, if it's acceptable, I might well nominate it. I've nominated and requested it for Yuletide in the past.

I don't think I'm ready to make that sort of decision yet, but I'd at least consider a well-reasoned argument. Remember that nominations won't be opening for another 7-8 months or so so everything is a bit nebulous atm.

Would children's game shows be eligible as long as we weren't nominating the children contestants? I was thinking like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, and Legends of the Hidden Temple where the shows have their own casts of fictional characters.

I think that gets a little bit further into eligibility than I planned at this early date, but I will be taking that into consideration when I sort out the guidelines.

Was the kids' TV challenge ever named?

It wasn't, but expect announcements and a timetable around the end of April.

Excited about the challenge being kid TV oriented (trying to balance my nominations for other exchanges). I don't have an exact name suggestion but I think something referring to"after these commercials, we'll be right back" or PSAs would be fun.
